Dark tides of orca [Display]

Below is my first idea for "Display: retell a story using only sound as the means of presentation"
I wanted to create something leading on from my psychogeography project but using more professional sampled sounds than recording something though my mp5 player, also something alot more "cleaner & clear".

Story idea: someone/thing searching for a lost clan of orca though a dark twisted storm feeling uneasy & shocked/scared. I used a royalty free sound bank for most of the orca/weather samples the rest is writen using built in refill banks within Reason 3 using a korg nano pad. The image below was a quick Idea I had after listing to one of the samples I used within the track.

Intagilo printmaking [workshop]

A basic print making technique in which we used mount card as a printing plate & "cut/marked/scored" into the top layer of the card to make a design/pattern or different textures to see how they would work printed.

After you have got your plate design you varnish it to stop the ink getting in & ruining the plate, then you use a brayer roller & water-based ink to ink the plate...the next stage is to set up your plate on a rolling press with your paper and felt-cloth to protect the roller then send it though the press. Below is my plate & print outcome.

Digital photography [workshop]

This workshop was pretty intense but enjoyable, there was alot to take in! We learnt about using a digital-slr camera in manual mode, using the iso, shutter speed & aperture to take a prefect photo using the correct settings then using Adobe Bridge to create a contact sheet to look easily though the images we took.

Also learnt about different file types & which are best suited for the individual task like RAW, TIFF & JPEG. Below is a couple of examples from this workshop.

Film [workshop]

In this workshop we was given a basic tutorail using Adobe Premiere to edit video & sound clips. Also looked at different types of video/digital camera's for recording & the file types you would use for each one.

After this we was all given some pre-recorded clips from the tutor & told to produce a short film to show we have basic undearstanding of the program, we worked in small groups...below is mine & Alex's piece which was used on the uni open day in the terradome.

Casting [workshop]

A one day workshop to learn the basics of casting something using clay & plaster to make a mould then filling it with wax to make a cast, everyone used a piece fruit for this project. Below is the mould and outcome.

Psychogeography

"Psychogeography: can be simply defined as the effects of the geographical environment on the emotions and behavior of individuals."

So I decided that I would go out around the surrounding area's of the uni late at night & record the sounds I hear using my mp5 player then using "reason" to chop, cut & manipulate the sounds. Then arrange them to a "drone" style track based around how I was feeling at the time. Below is the outcome under the image.

We also had to display what we had "made" in a appropriate manner, so I chose to use a locker & isolate the sound off away from other peoples work to give it more depth.
